NEW PAINTINGS AROUND WHITE BAY
White Bay has been integral part of Sydney's working harbour and a hub of activity day and
night. White Bay is also the location of the old power station and White Bay Hotel, both
standing disused since 1983. The two steel stacks of the power station rise high above the
surrounding buildings and are easily seen from a distance, making the old power station and
White Bay Hotel landmarks for those travelling on Victoria Road.
These works represent 12 months of exploration of White Bay, during which the artist built a
strange allegiance with the subject. The paintings and prints for this exhibition explore: the
silhouette of power station against the horizon; the strong shapes and decaying textures of the
cladding of the power station as well as the surrounding urban landscape of the shipping lanes,
wharves and rail yards.
The historic White Bay Hotel was destroyed by fire in September 2008 after the completion of
many of these works. Over the next few years, the wharves will close as shipping relocates
north and south. A number of development proposals have been submitted for redevelopment
of the power station site.
Exhibiting regularly in Sydney, Lisa Woolfe is primarily a painter and printmaker with a studio
in Leichhardt. She received the Works on Paper prize at the 2008 Waverley Art Prize.
FREEWAY SERIES
The Freeway Series is a new body of works in
progress.
As a child we made many trips to Bathurst to
visit my Grandmother. I remember wishing that
the journeys would never end. I loved the
speeding along and spent nearly the whole trip
staring out the window. I still do this on road
trips and before I know it hours have passed in a
flash. Sometimes I'm sorting through my own
thoughts, but usually I'm trying to take in the
glimpses of a world going by.
In these works I am trying to capture glimpses
from road trips.
Whilst working through I've noticed that I'm
drawn to endless lines of telegraph poles, lamp
posts and electricity wires disappearing into the
distance keeping the destination just out of reach.
The compositions are also quite solitary.
